The Hypothalamus and Weight Management

The Hypothalamus is a structure located near the center of the base of the brain. It is the link between the nervous system and the endocrine glands. It is the master gland and has connections to every organ throughout the body. Some of the functions of the hypothalamus are hydration, hormonal/ neurotransmitter regulation, heart rate, energy levels, hunger and salt cravings, and pituitary gland regulation. It is the master gland that regulates metabolism and physiological hunger.

The main function of the hypothalamus is homeostasis, or maintaining bodily balance. Eating de-natured toxic foods containing hydrogenated oils, MSG, food additives, high fructose corn syrup and more, affects the hypothalamus, which is essentially the control tower of the body, and becomes toxic. As a result, it is not able to communicate the necessary signals with the body. For instance, when a healthy person has eaten the proper amount, their fat cells send out leptin.

The hypothalamus receives this signal to stop eating and start burning fat. If it does not receive this signal, a person will not only eat to excess but will store fat instead of burning it. So, when the hypothalamus is not regulating correctly, we can feel intense and constant hunger. We can consume large quantities of food and still feel hungry right away or soon after eating.

According to Dr. Simeons, “Obesity in all its many forms is due to an abnormal functioning of one part of the body” (the hypothalamus). “If obesity is always due to one very specific hypothalamus deficiency, it follows that the only way to cure it is to correct this deficiency”.
